ABC Sings Howells Requiem

ABC returns to a favourite central London venue for the first concert of 2010 to sing Herbert Howells' atmospheric Requiem, dedicated to the memory of his son Michael who died of meningitis at the age of nine in 1935. It is an exceptionally beautiful and moving work, combining simple folk-song elements with double choir writing of great luminosity and richness.

We are complementing the quintessentially English nature of the Howells with two works by Poulenc, the austere and angular Quatre Motets pour un temps de Penitence and the Litanie a la Vierge Noire that celebrated the composer's conversion to Catholicism at Rocamadour in 1936. We also feature Biebl's Ave Maria, the Five Negro Spirituals from Tippett's A Child of Our Time, and a selection of Tudor Anthems.
