Sacred and Profane

After the long summer break, ABC are back in September with an enticing programme of Purcell and Benjamin Britten.

The evening provides a fascinating showcase for two great composers noted for the brilliance and immediacy of their response to the English language. Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb, a twentieth century reinvention of the verse anthem, is complemented by two of Henry Purcell's greatest essays in the genre; the exuberant My Beloved Spake and vengeful Jehova Quam Multi Sunt. At the same time Purcell's Funeral Sentences for Queen Mary (1694), sung at the composer's funeral the following year, are mirrored by one of Britten's last works - the pungent unaccompanied settings of Sacred and Profane.

All will take place at St Luke's Church Chelsea where we performed the Fauré Requiem in September 2006. This is a wonderful venue for choral music, with excellent acoustics and grand neo-gothic architecture by James Savage reminiscent of Kings College Cambridge. The church is on Sydney Street, and is within easy walking distance from South Kensington tube.
