One of the 'island churches' on The Strand, Sir Christopher Wren's St Clement Danes was completed in 1682. It is now the central church of the Royal Air Force.
In May 1941 a fire caused by German bombs completely destroyed the interior. Only the outer walls, the tower and the steeple survived. It was restored using funds from an RAF appeal, and was re-consecrated for them in October 1958.
It is one of two churches that claims the the "St Clements" who's bells say "Oranges and Lemons", and William Webb Ellis (the acknowledged inventor or Rugby Football) was once a Rector.
